The wisper in the dark
It was a cold and stormy night when sixteen-year-old Ethan found himself alone in his grandmother's old house. The house stood at the edge of a forest, far from the nearest town. His grandmother had gone to visit a neighbor, leaving Ethan by himself for a few hours.
The rain pounded against the windows while the wind howled through the trees. Ethan tried to distract himself by watching television, but the signal kept cutting out. Finally, he turned off the TV and decided to explore the house.
As he walked through the dimly lit hallway, he noticed a door he had never seen before. It was small, old, and covered in dust. Curious, Ethan reached for the handle.
The door creaked open.
Behind it was a narrow staircase leading down into darkness.
Ethan hesitated. His grandmother had always told him never to go into the basement. But curiosity got the better of him. He switched on his phone's flashlight and slowly descended the stairs.
The basement was cold and damp. Old furniture and forgotten boxes filled the room. As he shined his light around, he heard something.
A whisper.
"Ethan..."
He froze.
The voice was faint, almost lost beneath the sound of the storm.
"Ethan..."
His heart began to race.
"Who's there?" he called.
No answer.
He told himself it was just the wind. Yet the whisper came again, a little louder this time.
"Ethan..."
Suddenly, his flashlight flickered.
The darkness seemed to close around him.
Then he noticed something strange on the far wall—a dusty mirror. It looked ancient, its frame covered in strange carvings.
Drawn toward it, Ethan stepped closer.
At first, he saw only his reflection.
Then he blinked.
Behind his reflection stood a shadowy figure.
Ethan spun around.
No one was there.
When he looked back at the mirror, the figure was gone.
A loud crash echoed upstairs.
Startled, Ethan rushed toward the staircase. But halfway up, he heard the whisper again.
This time it came from right behind him.
"Ethan... don't leave..."
He turned slowly.
At the bottom of the stairs stood the shadowy figure from the mirror.
Its face was hidden in darkness. Its eyes glowed faintly in the blackness.
Ethan ran.
He burst into the hallway above and slammed the basement door shut. The whispering continued from the other side.
Then everything suddenly went silent.
The house felt unnaturally still.
Moments later, he heard the front door open.
His grandmother had returned.
Breathing heavily, Ethan told her everything.
To his surprise, she did not laugh.
Instead, her face turned pale.
"You opened the basement door?" she asked quietly.
Ethan nodded.
His grandmother stared toward the hallway.
"That mirror belonged to the previous owner," she whispered. "Many years ago, he disappeared without a trace. People said his spirit became trapped inside it."
A sudden knock echoed through the house.
Three slow knocks.
From the basement door.
Ethan and his grandmother stood frozen.
Then came a familiar whisper from below.
"Ethan..."
The voice was closer than ever.
And the basement door slowly began to open. This story is suitable for a general audience and avoids graphic horror while still being suspenseful and creepy.
