Mysterious stories: The stranger who knew everyone's secret

Every evening at exactly seven, a mysterious stranger appeared at the old café in the center of town.

Nobody knew his name.

He always wore a long black coat and sat alone at the corner table. He never ordered food. He only drank black coffee and watched the people around him.

One rainy evening, a young woman named Emma entered the café. As she passed his table, the stranger suddenly said, “Your brother didn’t leave town willingly.”

Emma froze.

Her brother had disappeared three years earlier. Everyone believed he had run away after an argument with their father. Only Emma knew she had always suspected something else.

“How do you know about my brother?” she whispered.

The stranger smiled. “I know everyone's secret.”

Emma stared at him.

He pointed toward an old man sitting near the window. “Mr. Wilson hides letters from his daughter.”

Then he looked at the café owner. “She secretly plans to sell this place.”

Every person he mentioned became pale.

Emma stepped closer. “What is my secret?”

The stranger leaned forward.

“You found your brother’s watch six months ago.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

She had never told anyone. She had discovered the watch buried beneath an old tree near her house, exactly where her brother used to play as a child.

“Who are you?” she demanded.

The stranger simply replied, “Someone who remembers.”

Suddenly, the café lights went out.

When they came back on, the stranger was gone.

On his table was a small envelope with Emma’s name written on it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Emma’s brother standing beside the mysterious stranger.

The photograph was dated twenty years ago.

Emma’s hands began to tremble.

Her brother had disappeared only three years earlier—and he had been just twenty-four.

At the bottom of the photograph, someone had written:

“He knows the truth. Now you do too.”

The next evening, Emma returned to the café.

The stranger was waiting.

This time, he smiled and said, “There is one secret I have never told anyone.”

Emma asked, “What is it?”

He slowly removed his hat.

Emma gasped.

His face was exactly like her brother’s.

Then he whispered, “I never disappeared. I was hiding from the person who knows all our secrets.”

Behind Emma, the café door suddenly locked.

And someone began knocking from the other side.
